One of the traits that separates Empress Theresa from the rest of Literature, according to Norman, is that it contains philosophy.  The five elements of a great book are plot, characters, setting, themes and philosophy.

Philosophy, according to Norman, "is about the transcendental.
So here we are living in these fragile bodies that will die sometime. Is that all there is?
Philosophy considers the afterlife and what we must do to get it."

Critics pointed out several famous philosophers whose philosophy did not include anything about the afterlife.  Norman selected Ayn Rand from the list and pointed out that she was an atheist, so her philosophy was a dead end.
